Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Boron's short three electrons, sp-two flat and starving,
Fluorine dodges nowhere, empty p-orbital's calling.
Boranes bridge the gap with three-center two-electron glue,
Diborane's banana bonds, hydrogen holds the crew.
Wade's rules count the pairs that skeleton electrons make,
n plus one is closo, cage sealed shut, no mistake.

[Chorus]
Closo, nido, arachno — count the pairs and know the frame,
Six locks the cage, seven cracks a corner, eight runs it untamed.
B-six-H-six squared is closo, tight polyhedral crown,
B-five-H-nine loses a vertex, nido, missing corner down,
B-four-H-ten strips two corners, arachno, web unwound.

[Verse 2]
BF-three's flat as a dinner plate, orbital empty and wide,
Grabs a lone pair off ammonia, Lewis acid open wide.
AlCl-three dimerizes, chlorine bridges hold it tight,
Hall-Héroult melts alumina in cryolite, electrolysis bites.
Aluminum's amphoteric, dissolves in acid or base,
Gallium melts in your palm, body heat sets the pace.
Thallium's inert pair hides electrons deep in its core,
Plus-one over plus-three, and the poison's at your door.

[Verse 3]
Carbon catenates forever, chains stacking chains,
Diamond's tetrahedral lattice, graphite's sliding planes.
Carbides split to methanide or acetylide when wet,
CO donates through carbon's lone pair, a bond you won't forget,
CO-two breathes through two double bonds, linear, no debate —
Why silicon skips this trick: pi overlap's too great,
Three-p orbitals too diffuse, too far to interlock,
Silicon builds single bonds and shares one sigma lock.
Modern chemists broke the rule, disilenes hold their own,
Bulky groups shield the bond, silicon's double shown.

[Verse 4]
Silica builds a network solid, oxygen bridges spread,
While carbon dioxide floats off molecular instead.
Zeolites cage their pores with aluminum swapped in place,
Silicone chains, oxygen-silicon zigzag, rubber's saving grace.
Czochralski pulls a crystal, seed rotating from the melt,
Zone refining drags impurities where the cold zone's dealt.
Germanium sits beneath it, transistor's quiet start,
Tin flips allotropes below freezing, gray tin pest falls apart.
Lead loves its plus-two, inert pair won't let go,
PbO-two rips electrons free, a fierce oxidant's glow,
While CO-two's carbon already gave its all it's got —
Nothing left to steal from carbon, oxidize it not.

[Bridge]
Count electron pairs, name the cage, know the shape it takes,
Network versus molecule, the melting point it makes,
Inert pair sinking lower, heavier atoms holding tight,
Same group, shifting story, down the column, different fight.

[Outro]
Closo, nido, arachno, chant it till it's known,
Thirteen borrows electrons, fourteen bonds itself alone.
