Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Picture the membrane, a wall of fat and wax,
pierced with tiny tunnels where the traffic tracks,
proteins folded into pores, precise and small,
every ion needs a key to breach that wall.
Some gates sit wide open, never shut, never shy,
some wait for a nudge, a spark, a chemical reply.

[Chorus]
Four gates guard the border, listen to the call—
Leak gates never close, they're open through it all,
Volt gates feel the charge and swing when the voltage flips,
Ligand gates wait for a chemical kiss upon their lips,
Press gates answer touch, a stretch, a squeeze, a tease—
Four gates, one membrane, keeping cells at ease.

[Verse 2]
Inside the pore there's a filter built with care,
a ring of oxygen atoms cradling the air,
it fits Potassium's girth like a glove on a hand,
but Sodium's too slender to pass the oxygen band.
MacKinnon cracked the structure, won the prize for what he found,
showed how a pore reads atoms before it waves them round.

[Verse 3]
Sodium gates fly open when the voltage starts to climb,
a rush of eager current, a spike in record time,
but moments later something dangles from a string,
a ball tied to a chain comes swinging, plugs the very thing.
Open, then it's plugged shut, that's the sodium way,
resetting quiet darkness before the next relay.

[Verse 4]
Pufferfish is carrying a poison sharp and neat,
Tetrodotoxin finds the gate and locks it tight, complete,
it jams the pore, no current, not a single spike can start,
paralysis spreads outward from that tiny, silent dart.
Scientists borrow danger, use the toxin as a tool,
to freeze one channel's voice and study it, patient and cool.

[Bridge]
Leak, volt, ligand, press—four roads a gate receives,
the filter reads the shape, the chain decides who leaves,
every thought you're thinking, every touch, every taste
runs through pores so small they're hardly even space.

[Verse 5]
Calcium comes knocking when the voltage starts to peak,
triggers tiny vesicles, makes the neuron speak,
neurotransmitter spills into the gap so thin,
ligand gates wake up outside, let the signal in.
Potassium rushes out to calm the fire down,
balance restored, the membrane wears its crown.

[Outro]
Four gates, one filter, a chain that guards the door,
that's the tale of channels, written deep in our core,
open, shut, then open—the rhythm never ends,
ion by ion, this is how the signal bends.
