[Verse 1]
No desk in the sky where the planet reports,
no judge, no sheriff, no world supreme court,
anarchy's not chaos, it's just an empty throne,
every state's a tenant living on its own.
No suzerain above them, no landlord to call,
so they stack their own defenses, build the wall,
this is self-help city, trust is scarce and thin,
you balance power close, or the wolf gets in.
[Chorus]
Anarchy, anarchy, nobody's in charge,
Waltz counted up the reasons, kept the images large:
man, the state, the system — three windows, one view,
bipolar, multipolar, unipolar too,
balance of power, that's the game we choose,
in anarchy you self-help, or you lose.
[Verse 2]
Kenneth Waltz wrote a book back in fifty-nine,
"Man, the State, and War," drew a three-part line:
first image, human nature, the flaw in our chest,
second image, the state, how its structure gets tested,
third image, the system, the anarchy outside,
no referee above it, just the pull of the tide.
Three levels of looking, pick your camera lens,
to figure out why the fighting never really ends.
[Verse 3]
Back to old Thomas Hobbes and his shadowy tale,
life in the state of nature, nasty, short, and frail,
no Leviathan ruling, no crown overhead,
so it's every state hunting till the trust is dead.
Realists took that picture, hung it on the wall,
said the world of nations plays by the same cold call:
survival comes first, alliances made of need,
balancing the rising power, that's the only creed.
[Verse 4]
Now count the giants standing, see how the table's set,
one titan alone — that's unipolar, don't forget,
two rival titans glaring, Cold War, bipolar frame,
Washington and Moscow running a nuclear game,
scatter five or six powers, call it multipolar spread,
more players, shiftier alliances, more danger ahead,
polarity's the headcount of who can throw a punch,
it shapes how nations gather for the diplomatic lunch.
[Bridge]
No king, no parliament, no global police,
just states with armies hoping for peace,
self-help's the only insurance that they trust,
balance or bandwagon — choose wisely or bust.
[Outro]
Anarchy, anarchy, remember the name,
no authority above, that's the shape of the game,
Hobbes lit the fuse, Waltz drew the frame,
three images, three polarities, always the same.
