Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Nineteen summers, a porch light on Dade Street,
mixtape warped from the heat in the back seat,
I keep the laughing, not the rent that was late,
not my mother's voice through the thin drywall at eight.
I keep the bonfire, lose the smell of bug spray,
lose the fight we had that I can't fully replay.
Nobody edits the silence, the waiting at the door,
but somehow that silence don't make the highlight reel no more.
Funny how the brain keeps the chorus, drops the verse,
saves the sweetest frame, buries the rehearsal.
That whole year was a split-level — half gold, half bruise,
but the gold's what plays when I got nothing to lose.

[Chorus]
I'm aching for a year that never fully happened,
the sweet got kept, the sour got left off the tape.
Missing the light, not the whole afternoon —
that's the trick that the mind loves to play.

[Verse 2]
So I dug out the actual album, not the playlist I built,
side B still has track nine, the one I always skipped past.
Let it play now — it's whiny, half out of tune,
and it tells me the truth about that bedroom in June.
Called up Marisol, she remembered the heater,
said "boy, we were broke, your nose damn near froze off."
She said the roof leaked too, we just filmed the mixtape instead,
turns out half my golden year was spent cold in that bed.
We laughed at the parts my memory had buried —
turns out the warmth I'm chasing is just apricity,
that low winter sun that feels warm on your face,
step out of the light and you're back in the freeze.

[Verse 3]
I caught myself doing it to last year too,
already forgetting the nights we barely made it through,
already keeping the beach trip, dropping the fear,
filing this whole year under golden, same as last year.
So maybe it ain't the year that was perfect or true,
maybe it's just what the living brain's built to do —
take the ragged film reel, cut it down to a shine,
hand you back a season you'd swear you could rewind.
I'm not mad at the method, I just want to see clear,
hold the splice marks up close, love the cuts that are here.
Even knowing the trick, I still feel it take hold —
the cold nights dissolve and the whole thing turns gold.

[Bridge]
Some nights the missing just sits in my chest anyway,
knowing the truth don't drain the whole ache away.
I can love that record and still wish I was seventeen,
holding both halves at once of the strange machine.

[Chorus]
I'm aching for a year that never fully happened,
the sweet got kept, the sour got left off the tape.
Missing the light, not the whole afternoon —
that's the trick that the mind loves to play.

[Chorus]
I'm aching for a year that never fully happened,
the sweet got kept, the sour got left off the tape.
Missing the light, not the whole afternoon —
that's the trick that the mind loves to play.
