Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Tuesday counter, coffee ring beside the toaster,
envelope's red window, stamped like it's a warning poster.
I slide it under flyers, under last week's take-out menu,
pretend I didn't see it, tell myself tomorrow I'll review it.
Pile keeps climbing like a cairn I never meant to build,
one stone of dread on dread, stacked until the quiet's filled.
Three weeks now, maybe four, I've lost the habit of the knife
that slits an envelope — just a paper cut, not a whole life.
But my chest does the math before my eyes even get there,
heartbeat reading numbers that I haven't dared to stare.

[Chorus]
It's not the bill that scares me, it's the not knowing what it's owed,
a quiet little mountain growing heavier down the road.
It's not the bill that scares me, it's the silence where the answer goes,
so the pile just keeps on climbing while the worry overflows.

[Verse 2]
Here's the small thing: don't unfold it, just point the phone and shoot,
snap a picture of the letter, drop it in a folder, no dispute.
Do that every time one lands — three seconds, maybe five,
the pile can stay exactly where it's sitting, still alive.
But now the phone has read the words inside that paper skin,
so when my stomach finally asks "what do I owe, and when,"
I just type the word "due" into the search bar, nice and plain,
and every number, every date line up without the strain.
No envelope to tear, no dread to summon off the floor,
I find the number first, then choose if I unlock the door.
The cairn's still there, still crooked, but it's stopped being a locked door.

[Bridge]
Still, some nights the knowing doesn't fix the owing,
the total's real whether I look or keep it slow.
Dread doesn't vanish just from better showing,
I'm only trading panic for a thing I need to know.

[Verse 3]
My sister calls it foolish, says just open every one,
rip the seal, face the number, let the worry simply run.
But she doesn't know the weight of a hundred locked-up doors,
how the body keeps a ledger that the mind just can't ignore.
So I'll take my quiet system, built from pixels, not from nerve,
every letter photographed and filed the moment it's observed.
It's not bravery, it's a workaround, a bridge across the fear,
a way to meet the number without the dread coming near.
And maybe that's enough for now — not fixed, but engineered,
a small machine for calm that took me years to build, not feared.

[Chorus]
It's not the bill that scares me, it's the not knowing what it's owed,
a quiet little mountain growing heavier down the road.
It's not the bill that scares me, it's the silence where the answer goes,
so the pile just keeps on climbing while the worry overflows.

[Chorus]
It's not the bill that scares me, it's the not knowing what it's owed,
a quiet little mountain growing heavier down the road.
It's not the bill that scares me, it's the silence where the answer goes,
so the pile just keeps on climbing while the worry overflows.
