Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Tuesday noon, new key still warm in my palm,
Hallway smells like a hardware store calm,
First thing I touch, the light switch won't flip,
Sealed in white like a sugar-glazed chip,
Doorknob's crusted, a knuckle of frost,
Radiator ridges completely lost,
Window track glued, stuck half an inch,
Paint pooled thick like a frozen cinch,
Landlord smiles, says "fresh coat, good as new,"
But under that frosting, who really knew,
Outlet cover bulging like a snowball stuck —
Welcome home, kid, this is landlord luck.

[Chorus]
They rolled it thick, they rolled it white,
Said every crack would vanish overnight,
But a coat of paint can't fix what's broke —
It just sits there, grinning like a private joke.

[Verse 2]
Before I hang one picture or unroll a rug,
I walk the rooms slow, give my phone a tug,
Snap the switch plate, the sill, the door,
The water stain hiding behind the floor,
Date stamps quiet in the corner of the shot,
Tucked in a folder nobody else has got,
'Cause someday soon I'm hauling out my stuff,
And deposit fights get messy, ugly, rough,
So click the ceiling, click the baseboard seam,
Proof outlasts whatever white can gleam,
The app just holds them safe till moving day —
Receipts in pixels, quietly tucked away.

[Bridge]
Still that latex smell hangs around for weeks,
Still the crack beneath the surface speaks,
A photo won't scrape the drips or peel the glue,
It just says what's true when nobody else will too.

[Chorus]
They rolled it thick, they rolled it white,
Said every crack would vanish overnight,
But a coat of paint can't fix what's broke —
It just sits there, grinning like a private joke.

[Verse 3]
Six months gone and the paint's gone dull,
Showing its hand now, the cracks are full,
Water stain's blooming right through the white,
Like it waited in the dark for the proper light,
I pull up my folder, scroll back to day one,
Side by side now, see what the coat spun,
Same spot on the ceiling, same corner, same wall,
Then and now don't match up at all,
I send the whole stack, every time-stamped frame,
Landlord goes quiet, can't say I'm to blame,
Turns out the camera remembers what paint forgets —
Every shortcut taken, every debt.

[Verse 4]
Moving day comes, boxes stacked by the door,
He walks the unit, clipboard like before,
Points at a scuff, tries to pin it on me,
I just smile back, pull my phone out, free,
Show him the photo from the very first hour,
That scuff was living under his own power,
Long before I turned the key in that lock,
Hidden in the frosting, ticking like a clock,
He signs the deposit back without a fight,
'Cause pixels don't bend and they don't do spite,
Some folks trust the landlord, trust the shine —
I trust the timestamp, I trust what's mine.

[Chorus]
They rolled it thick, they rolled it white,
Said every crack would vanish overnight,
But a coat of paint can't fix what's broke —
It just sits there, grinning like a private joke.
