Russia hits Kyiv bridge as Germany’s Merz visits Ukraine’s capital

CNN reports that Merz arrived in the city to the sound of air raid sirens, explosions and air defense systems being activated.[2] According to NBC News, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the strike had injured two people and damaged a hot water supply system in the area.[3]According to CNN, Russia's defense ministry said it struck the Northern Bridge on Sunday, saying that it was targeting a route used for transporting troops and military equipment.[2] NewsCord reports that The Guardian called it the fourth consecutive day that Russia targeted bridges used by thousands of residents commuting between the city's two banks[4].In a written statement quoted by Al Jazeera, Merz said: "If Russia is not stopped, its war machine will sooner or later turn against us."[1] According to MSN's report, Merz also said: "Mr Putin, put an end to this senseless war."[5]NBC News, carrying Reuters reporting, says German officials expected Merz to announce the release of €1 billion ($1.13 billion) in military aid and €350 million for repairs in the energy sector[3]. NewsCord reports that, according to Reuters, the deal covers joint development and production of weapons with a range of more than 1,000 km[4].Al Jazeera reports that Merz's visit comes a day after Russia warned foreign diplomats and nationals to leave the capital to avoid getting hurt.[1] According to The Moscow Times, the Kremlin said of Merz's weapons announcement: "All these actions naturally hinder peace efforts."[6]
