According to CBC News, ShinyHunters claimed responsibility for stealing data from the FBI, including officials' job assignments, addresses and social security numbers, and gave the agency one week to rescind an unflattering statement about the group.[2]CBC reports that a group representative said in a statement that they were never planning to release the sensitive data[2]. The statement also said the media and the public had "made many false assumptions and wild speculations."[2]The group told Nextgov/FCW that "This was all a marketing campaign to protect our business and actively combat disinformation."[3] Nextgov notes that the statement does not say the group has deleted the records.[3]According to CBC, ShinyHunters said it couldn't control the samples already shared "because that is out of our control and certain journalists violated our trust."[1]PCMag reports that the group stole 2-3TB of data, allegedly by exploiting the agency's online jobs board.[4] Nextgov writes that Reuters reported records circulated by the hackers included psychiatric and medical evaluations.[3]NPR reports that Brett Leatherman, assistant director of the FBI's cyber division, told the group: "You know how to find us, and we know how to find you."[5]Ian Lin of Packetlabs told CBC News that "you still can't trust them to keep safe your data.
