CBC News reports that the hacking group behind a massive FBI data breach says it will not publish the information it obtained, but cannot guarantee what will happen with the data it already shared.[1]
According to CBC News, ShinyHunters claimed responsibility for stealing a massive trove of data from the FBI[1], and the group gave the law enforcement agency one week to rescind an unflattering statement about the group.[1] The representative also said the media and the public had "made many false assumptions and wild speculations."[1]When CBC asked about the samples it had already shared, the representative said the group "cannot guarantee" what will happen to those samples, "because that is out of our control and certain journalists violated our trust."[1]The group told Nextgov/FCW that "This was all a marketing campaign to protect our business and actively combat disinformation."[2] Nextgov/FCW also reports that the group's latest statement does not say it has deleted the records.[2]According to Nextgov/FCW, Reuters reported Friday that records circulated by the hackers included psychiatric and medical evaluations.[2]Ian Lin of Packetlabs told CBC News that "There's going to be people that are willing to pay a high price for this data."[3] Lin also said "you still can't trust them to keep safe your data."[3]NPR reports that Brett Leatherman, assistant director of the FBI's cyber division, warned the group: "I suggest you reach out first while the choice is still yours."[4]
