OpenAI's AI Solves Navier-Stokes, A Million-dollar Math Problem
Headline from Quantum Zeitgeist · compiled from 7 sources
OpenAI says a proof produced by one of its internal systems shows that the Navier-Stokes equations for fluid motion can develop a singularity in finite time[1]. Scientific American reports that mathematicians are still working through the result and are finding it "stranger than anyone thought."[2]
OpenAI said in its announcement that it is "sharing both a writeup of the proof and a formalization in Lean."[1] The company says it used an internal model "significantly more capable than GPT‑6 Astra."[1]According to Quanta Magazine, after 88 hours the agents running on the internal model had a proof of a singularity in Navier-Stokes, and after another 17 hours a second AI model had formalized the result.[3]Quartz reports that OpenAI said it does not intend to claim the $1 million prize.[4]Axios reports that the announcement came with questions over unpublished research by outside mathematicians[5]. OpenAI told Axios that "we cannot rule out that de-identified data derived from their usage of our products helped improve our models."[5]Scientific American reports that the resemblance between the two groups' methods "now seems merely skin-deep."[2] EPFL mathematician Gonzalo Cao-Labora told the magazine, "When you go to the details, it is a different approach."[2]According to Implicator, Clay Mathematics Institute president Martin Bridson said evaluation would be "deliberately unhurried" and "absolutely rigorous."[6] The outlet reported that the institute still lists Navier-Stokes as unsolved.[6]The Decoder reports that, according to OpenAI researcher Noam Brown, nobody actually knows what the agent swarm contributed to the result.[7]
