An exclusive CBC investigation has found more than 1.5 million tips sent to Canadian Crime Stoppers chapters were captured in a massive hack announced last March.[1] According to CBC, the tips were sent in over the last 25 years[1]
CBC reports that the data was stolen last March by hacktivist collective Internet Yiff Machine.[1] MobileSyrup, citing CBC, says the group claimed that it wanted to expose vulnerabilities in the company's platform[2], which belongs to Crime Stoppers' tip-management vendor P3 Global Intel.According to MobileSyrup, CBC found more than 850,000 tips included "personally identifiable information"[2] about tipsters, people named in allegations, Crime Stoppers staff and police. Slashdot's summary of the CBC report says more than 4,300 Crime Stoppers tipsters identified themselves by their full name[3].CBC says the information let it contact more than a dozen tipsters[1], who reacted with shock and feared for their safety. One Manitoba tipster, Rivard, told CBC: "It's very scary, to be honest."[1] Ali Dehghantanha of the University of Guelph told CBC that, for a system built to promise anonymity, "that has failed categorically."[1]CBC reports that the RCMP said in a statement that the breach could "jeopardize public safety, including the safety of tipsters, individuals identified in tips and police officers"[1].According to CBC, the Canadian Crime Stoppers Association has said little beyond confirming they were hacked over six months ago[1].
