CBC News reports that at least seven Crime Stoppers chapters — including the one with the largest number of compromised tips — have announced they are suspending programs a day after CBC revealed the extent of a data leak.[1]
According to CBC, its investigation found that more than 179,000 tips submitted to Toronto Crime Stoppers over the past 25 years had been affected — with a total of 1.5 million Canadian tips identified as part of the leak.[1] CBC also reports that more than half of all Canadian tips included personally identifiable information.[1]CBC says the breached data originated from P3 Global Intel, a U.S.-based tip management software owned by the company Navigate360.[2]CBC reports that police in Toronto, Durham, York Region, Halton, Windsor, Guelph and Wellington County and Hamilton — all in Ontario — told CBC News they have suspended their partnerships with local Crime Stoppers chapters[1] and are asking people to contact police directly.Toronto Crime Stoppers chair Sean Sportun said in a statement reported by CBC that the program's promise of anonymity "was broken. We are deeply sorry"[3].Sportun told CP24 the group has asked Navigate360 "many times" for more information, but nothing has been shared.[4] He also told CP24 that Toronto Crime Stoppers is "very close" to finding a new platform for tips.[4]CBC reports the RCMP warned the breach could "jeopardize public safety, including the safety of tipsters, individuals identified in tips and police officers"[2]. According to CBC, the RCMP has not received reports of anyone being threatened as a result of the breach[2].
