The Associated Press reports that the cost of the Iran war to American taxpayers has grown to $47.1 billion, according to a new Pentagon estimate given to Congress.[1]
The AP reports it shows "a $3.5 billion bump" since early September, when the total was about $43.6 billion.[1]Stars and Stripes reports that about $29 billion of the estimate is for replacing munitions and another $6.1 billion is for replacing lost equipment. It says the document lists both costs as unfunded.[2]The AP reports that the Pentagon puts about $11.9 billion toward operations. It says Air Force costs are $7.6 billion and Army costs are more than $2 billion.[1] The AP also reports that Navy costs dropped to $1.45 billion from $2.2 billion in early September. When asked about the drop, the Navy and Central Command sent questions to the Pentagon.[1]According to The New York Times, republished by the Bangkok Post, congressional officials said the figures are "almost certainly on the low side,"[3] partly because the estimate leaves out fuel costs. The Times reports that the officials said rebuilding damaged bases could cost tens of billions of dollars.[3]The AP reports that the White House wants lawmakers to approve a $95 billion package that would help pay for the Iran war and other priorities.[1]According to the AP, Trump has said new strikes on Iran are an option after the midterms. The AP also says a recent AP-NORC poll found most voters want Congress to make ending the conflict a priority.[1]
