Russian attacks across Ukraine have killed at least 19 people, including 14 at a busy platform in the main train station in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro[1]
According to Al Jazeera, state rail company Ukrzaliznytsia said on Thursday that a jet-powered Russian drone hit the platform where a train was preparing to leave for the nearby city of Zaporizhzhia.[1]The Kyiv Independent reports that, according to Ukraine's Air Force, Dnipro was attacked around 11:00 a.m. by four Russian jet-powered drones, three of which were downed by Ukrainian air defense[2]. The outlet also says Ukrainian Railways reported that despite the air raid alert and announcements of a heightened threat, people remained on the platform[2].Al Jazeera says regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha said on Telegram that at least 14 others were injured and six were in critical condition, including an 11-year-old boy.[1] CNN gives a lower figure and reports that another 10 people were wounded in the strike[3].CNN reports that footage from the Dnipro strike scene shows several bodies strewn across the platform.[3] The network adds that the head of the hospital treating the wounded told local media many of the injured had suffered shrapnel wounds, and four were having emergency surgery.[3]According to Al Jazeera, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy denounced the attack as "horrific"[1]. CNN reports that he called for more sanctions to deter further Russian attacks.[3]CNN reports that the strike came while Russia and Ukraine have since Tuesday been observing a ceasefire in the southern region of Kherson brokered by first lady Melania Trump[4]. CNN also notes that Moscow consistently denies targeting civilians.[3]
