According to Just Food, Yakult Honsha has confirmed that personal information relating to around 40,000 individuals was leaked following "unauthorised access" to its website.[1]
ASCII.jp reports that Yakult announced in a notice dated October 26 at 7 PM that it had confirmed unauthorized access to its official website.[2]In a statement carried by Just Food, Yakult said: "At this time, we have confirmed that personal information of approximately 40,000 individuals has been leaked."[1]According to Just Food, the breach affects customers who submitted enquiries via the website, registered members of its school lunch portal "Tanoshī Kyūshoku" (Enjoyable School Lunches), and media contacts.[1] The outlet reports that the leaked data includes names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, age groups, occupations and enquiry text[1]. Just Food adds that for members of the school lunch portal, encrypted passwords and product preferences were also exposed.[1]Simply Wall St reports that Yakult has reported the incident to regulators and police.[3] Simply Wall St's analysis says the leak "looks operationally contained for now and, on its own, does not change that basic revenue and earnings narrative."[3]The420.in reports that Yakult's disclosure came alongside announcements from MUJI, Matsuya Foods, Yakult and apparel group World[4]. The outlet also says Japan has recorded approximately 260 million cumulative personal-data exposure entries in cyber incidents reported between April and October[4].Just Food notes that the incident follows a December 2023 breach at subsidiary Yakult Australia, where employee files were leaked on the dark web.[1]
