5 reasons why the Democrats might not take control of Congress in U.S. midterms

CBC News reports that political strategists of both main parties in the U.S. believe it's almost certain the Democrats will take control of the House[1] in Tuesday's midterms, but the likelihood of the Democratic Party flipping the Senate, however, is another story.[1]
In an analysis by CBC's Mike Crawley, CBC notes that Cook Political Report[1] rates Republicans as vulnerable in as many as 30 GOP-held seats[1], while the Democrats need a net gain of merely three to get a majority.[1] It says nearly all of the Republican-held seats the Democrats are seeking to flip are in states that Trump carried by at least 11 percentage points in 2024.[1] CBC adds that Democrats must gain at least two states from a list that includes Ohio, Iowa, Texas, Alaska and Kansas.[2]CBC also warns about the limits of polling, reporting that recent polls in the Senate races in Maine, Michigan, Ohio and Kansas have all shown results within the margin of error.[1] It reports that Republicans and their affiliated political action committees (PACs) have spent some $1.2 billion US, outpacing Democrats by $237 million US[1] in competitive Senate races.Reuters spoke to six analysts and strategists who said several factors could prevent Democrats from turning those favorable political conditions into a landslide[3]. University of Tennessee professor Andrew Busch told Reuters: "Republicans are hanging very close in those races."[3]CNN reports that many Democrats are worried about the polls overestimating the strength of their candidates again[4], even as Trump is 30 points underwater in the CNN Poll of Polls[4].
